Not a daft comment at all, in fact that sounds like a great acting choice! Thanks for telling us about it!

Agree! Obviously I only know from Billy Live, but her face goes part and parcel with the delivery of that line. She's wonderful there, and throughout!

Thursday Matinee 19th March

Walking over to the theatre from the station we met the end of the Groups Queue before we even got to the first pedestrian crossing. Having negotiated our way past the well-marshalled youngsters by using the inside lane we reached the main doors in time to see another group approaching from the other direction. The Board-at-the-Door promised us Thomas/Todd/Connie.

By 2.20pm the buzz inside was palpable. Having seen Thomas burst upon the stage on his debut last week I could picture him sitting impatiently backstage thinking, “Is that clock stopped, why aren’t the hands moving”. As MD Chris Hatt arrived there was slight reduction in the volume of chatter as it dawned on the assembled masses that the time was near but it soon rose again until it was finally silenced by the pre-show announcement. Small Boy Liam arrived to applause and we were good to go.

The energy generated by Thomas onstage would most likely power the entire Tube system. It is apparent the moment he steps through the door and it spreads around the theatre from wall to wall. Everyone is instantly plugged in. Us fans (or should that be “we fans”?) are mindful of the happy knack the casting people have of finding the boys with that special something that ultimately decides who gets in and so it would be easy to conclude that, when Thomas walked in for his first audition, all the heads were instantly nodding in unison. With this level of energy and skills to go with it, it is a mouthwatering prospect to think what he is going to be like in three/six month’s time.

But back to yesterday’s gripping and emotional show. Thomas delivered another magnificent Billy interpretation. This time he was teamed with busy-as-a-bee Todd who weaved his own particular brand of magic to lead Thomas in a delightful, colourful and smile-filled Expressing and the two of them intricately and expertly navigated their way through the Winter scene with much aplomb.

The lead up to Angry Dance was very powerful and a glance over at Thomas whilst Chris and Ruthie were in full flow of rage revealed Billy’s helplessness as his dancing future was about to dissolve before his very eyes. Then again on the table as passions became further inflamed he looked on silently distraught until, left alone to his own devices, he finally blew up and the scene was set for the floorboards to be set alight and the battle between Billy and the beating batons to be fought. Brilliant stuff only ending when an exhausted Billy dropped down with one of the most unmerciful screams ever heard inside the hallowed walls.

The new team of Ballet Girls in Shine and Solidarity were absolutely superb bringing so much colour to the grey mining town scene. Their energy in bringing all this to us was equally evident and their teamwork brought about by skill and hard work in training was outstanding.

Super Debbie, Connie, was in her usual and effective nonchalantly deprecating mood and pulled no punches when expressing her views. I can never imagine Debbie paying any lip service to the PC brigade and good for her.

In Part 2 Dream Ballet was poetry in motion with Lee Hoy and Thomas pulling out all the stops. Thomas’ first Electricity last week was unbelievable, could he repeat it? The answer was Yes PLUS. Oh, man, this wasn’t just electric it was cosmic. The music for this dance is an eloquent masterpiece that easily stands on its own as a listening experience. The choreography that goes with it is demanding, tough and spectacularly graceful. Thomas did it proud. Towards the end of it we’re gonna need the revolution counters to put a number on his spins but if the Victoria works people need to go deeper they can just attach a drill bit to Thomas’ feet. Watching this develop even further over the coming months will be a breathtaking treat to look forward to. I was delighted to see him holding his final pose, with a lovely smile, which gave us an opportunity to show our full appreciation of what we had just seen.

As Barry has mentioned in his review the addition of the F-A-D line and Ruthie’s laughing reaction to it is a stroke of genius in that it emphasises more definitively the sudden silence that follows as Billy begins to waver and doubt enters the equation. Thomas’ matter-of-fact rendition of F-A-D yesterday had me in stitches.

We have a fantastic cast of principals and Ensemble who never letup. Every show I have seen each and everyone gives it their all to ensure that we the audience get more than value for money. At the risk of being totally boring I reiterate that there is nothing on the stage or the telly or the big screen that comes even close to the entertainment, inspirational and emotional values of BETM. There is no reason it shouldn’t go on forever (barring a few months of theatre refurbishment, maybe). There will always be a new and willing audience bursting to see it to add to the fully committed fans. Billys will come, eventually grow and go leaving their imprint on it forever and inspiring other boys to follow in their footsteps. Thomas Hazelby is the latest in the line to bear witness to this. Raise your glasses.

Saturday 28th March (Evening show) Matteo's final performance...........

I'm sure that I was not the only member of this forum to get a shock upon reading the initial posts about last nights show being Matteo's final performance as Billy Elliot. It was not something that I was expecting for some time, and I also can't understand how they kept it so hush hush? Why no notice other than a Facebook post just an hour and a half before the show?

It's at times like last night that I feel lucky to work so close to The VPT, because if I did not, I would not have got the opportunity to see the elusive Matteo Zecca one last time. I was supposed to meet my husband for dinner straight after work, and as much as I love him..... He got stood up. I left work at 7.14 and was lucky enough to get a cab straight away because I got to my seat just as Mr Massey was walking on stage. What followed was something very special...............

Mr Massey thanked Matteo's parents for "Loaning us your brilliant Son," and then went on to explain that he had asked the other child cast members before the show to describe Matteo in one word. "Funny, kind, polite, amazing, best bud" were some of the adjectives that I can remember. It was a nice touch I thought.

When Matteo walked out on to the stage for the first time last night, he got a big cheer, as seems to be the custom for Billy's on their leaving nights. From that moment Matteo threw himself into his performance as if the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders. I have seen Matteo before, and always really loved his Billy, but I had never seen him up so close, and having done so last night, I realise what an amazing little actor he his. First off, I love his Geordie accent, it's not over the top, it's just right. Also the way he delivers his lines, the timing of them is so unique, and very, very effective. For me, getting Billy's emotions right is just as important as getting his dancing right, and Matteo is a very emotional Billy. Perfect! His facial expressions are fantastic to watch, very expressive at the right times, and very funny at others. During 'Expressing yourself' he seemed to be doing his best to make Tomi lose control and start giggling. I suspect that the two might well be good friends off stage, because on it, they seem to have a lot of rapport. Matteo just has so many nuances to his Billy that make him so unique, I would be here all day if I had to type them all out.

We are supposed to believe that Billy is a somewhat unhappy boy, given his circumstances, and that when he finds dance, he finds something that makes him truly happy. Watching Matteo dance last night, happiness is what shone off of him. That huge smile of his really does light the place up, and because of this, and his other skills, he really draws the audience in, and makes them not only care for Billy, but root for him also.

Solidarity was amazing, he is the only Billy that really gets that "Ma Mams dead" line spot on. Spins, pirouettes and a huge round of applause to end it.

Born to boogie was great fun, perfect skipping and a great somersault off of the piano into the bargain.

Angry dance.... The last time I saw Matteo perform this I found him to be far too timid. Not last night though, he was as angry as angry gets, and the language...........

Dream ballet was emotional as always, I've never heard so much clapping during that dance, or after.

Electricity really was something special for me. It was if Matteo thought to himself.... "This is the last time I'm going to do this, so bollocks to it, I'm going to really go for it." In fact, that last sentiment could apply to his whole performance. He did go for it, and it was beautiful. A standing ovation followed, one that seemed to go on, and on, and on, and Deka just let it.

Matteo was on the home straight after that, and the rest of his performance was as perfect as what went before it. All the emotions in the right place, and then more for good measure. There was a partial name change in the closing scene. Matteo after kissing Tomi said...... "See ya Tomi." Tomi himself stuck to the script though. I guess the one that is staying has to do what he's told, or else. Tomi has proved to be as elusive to me as Matteo. I think I've only seen him twice before. I love the way he camps it up, I thought he was brilliant last night.

I cannot remember the last time I saw a child have as much fun as Matteo did last night during the finale. He really let himself go, and it was very infectious. That massive grin was evident throughout, and he allowed himself to change a few things. For example........ Usually Deka will quite often give whatever Billy is on a two handed slap around the chops. Last night it was Deka that got the slap from Matteo, and by the sound of it, he was not expecting it.

It was Deka that closed proceedings last night. I love the way they involve small boy in encouraging the audience to vote for Billy in the Olivier awards. Very clever, and amusing! Deka then literally picked Matteo up off of his feet, carried him to the front of the stage
and bid an emotional farewell to the nights hero. What an asset that man is to this show! I was a tad emotional myself at this point, so I can't recall exactly what his words were, but he thanked Matteo, and told him what a great Billy he had been, and to always remember how special he is, whatever he does in the future. He then introduced Matteo to the crowd for one final time, and one last standing ovation.

It was the best, most enjoyable, most emotional Billy show I have seen in the time I have been attending The VPT. In fact, it has been a long, long time since I have enjoyed something that much on any West End stage. I wish that I had got to see more of Matteo, and I have no idea why his run has come to what I think is a premature end, but I hope he knows how much that audience loved him last night. I think he must..... It was a magical performance Matteo, truly magical.

Thank you for that nice review. Glad to hear he had a great final performance. Sad to have just missed it. The fact that he didn't obey the rules of the company for the name-change at the end makes me smile.

Saturday March 28th Evening Performance – Matteo/Tomi/Demi
Last show for Matteo Zecca

David Massey gave his customary speech thanking Matteo & his family. He’d also asked Matteo’s friends to describe him in one word. The one that really summed up what we were about to witness was “amazing”.

From the moment’s Matteo’s entrance was greeted with applause, the smile rarely left his face. His enjoyment radiated through the entire theatre.

Lewis set up the boxing scene – does anyone shout louder than him? The look of complete disdain on Matteo’s face when asked to box by George, followed by his slow warm up to full on comedy antics had the audience in stitches.

Expressing with Tomi was full on fun from start to finish.

The first real test of his emotions would come with the letter and he delivered a beauty. He kept his composure perfectly whilst causing many of the audience to reach for their tissues.

In B2B he produced probably the cleanest skipping routine I’ve seen and timed his somersault of the piano perfectly.

Angry dance was full of rage. He must have left his own marks in the toilet such was the ferocity of his kicks. As he let out his last scream and fell to the floor the ovation started. By the time he’d picked himself up this turned into a standing ovation and he just stood there for some time soaking it up before providing one final glare and walking off for a well-deserved interval.

Dream Ballet was simply breath-taking. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Billy smile as much as Matteo did. It was in place from virtually the whole routine.

Electricity was Matteo’s way of saying this may be my last performance, but I’m going to leave you with something that you’ll never forget. The applause started as he sung his last lines and the standing ovation just went on and on.

The home stretch contained all of the little extras of his unique take on Billy. The way he walks right up to Ruthie to say “I should have told you before”. His jump up to join in the celebration with Dad and Tony after he’s got in and a little thumbs up to George after his little dance congratulating him on getting in, whilst his face says “yeah, whatever”

The letter reprise was the only time you could see that he was fighting his emotions. His final quiet “Bye mam” was heart breaking.

“See ya, Tomi”, “See ya, Billy”, left a visibly moved Tomi watching Matteo walk away from him for the last time.

The finale, with the pressure off, was Matteo having fun. Fun that infected the entire cast and produced the most enjoyable show that I’ve seen. David Massey had said in his intro that last nights should be a celebration and it was. A celebration of the incredible talent that is Matteo Zecca.

It was left to the heart and soul of the cast, Deka Walmsley, to lead the final tribute. “It’s not how you start, but how you finish” he said. “I want this kid to leave not only have done a brilliant show, but to feel special. So wherever you go in your life and whatever you do and however your career goes, always remember this moment.”

People will debate why Matteo left, but he left at the top of his game delivering a truly magical performance that will never be forgotten.

Yes, Matteo said "See ya, Tomi" as he walked off the stage. Whether Tomi was expecting it, I don't know. But was a lovely moment from Matteo.

Thanks jmh2014 and Bridget40 for two awesome reviews, it must be really great to be able to just "pop over" to the VPT for special nights like this.
On my last visit to London, I managed to see one show, and it was Matteo, and it was wonderful. So sorry he is leaving because I would love to see him on stage again on my next trip. On that trip I took two of my co-workers to the show, suffice it to say they are both huge fans now and both read this forum religiously, thanks to Matteo Zecca !
With the departures of Elliot and Matteo, I know on my next trip no matter who Deka drags out in the opening act it will be a Billy I have never seen as they are all new to me now.
It's so bittersweet, and yet it's one of the things that keeps me coming back !

Thank you Bridget40 and jmh2014 for the wonderful reviews. You were both so lucky to be there.

With only 90 minutes notice and living 300 miles away it was an impossibility for me.

It is a few years since I have heard either Billy or Michael refer to the other by their real name at the end. It's a shame as I always thought it was very touching.
