BETM Toronto

Post by ERinVA »

"Now, an unnamed source says there’s a plan in place to move the Chicago production to Toronto in early 2011."
Mirvish Productions, which at one time was in the running to produce the North American premiere of Billy Elliot, would present the show for an undetermined amount of time in Toronto; the show would then embark on a North American tour."

A whole bunch of if's in that...Chicago only lasting a year, I'll predict longer. Plus it goes there THEN starts a tour? I'll officially believe any new Billy shows when they are announced(till then its all wishfull thinking, like they said it was semi announced it was opening there first)

I think after the sucess of the show in NY alot of places are showing interest in putting on a production. But it takes alot of time to actually get it to the point of opening. I suspect Stephen Daldry would not let a production go ahead if he felt there was not enough going on to make it just as good as every other production.

It would certainly be exciting if Liam could return after his Broadway stint and play Billy in his home town. Yeah I know, too many "ifs".

An article about BETM opening in Toronto in February of 2011 was published on Canada's largest online news site this morning -- at Canada's http://www.theStar.com .

Director Stephen Daldry and Toronto producer Jon Finn, at a press conference at the Panasonic Theatre in Toronto this morning, admitted that they weren’t certain yet whether the Toronto run would simply feature a transfer of the Chicago production or involve a whole new company, which might be largely from Toronto.

Thanks for the article, porschesrule!

Awwh, they forgot to mention the other Canadian Billy: Liam!

"There’s already a history of Canadian involvement with the show, which includes Montreal’s David Alvarez’s Tony Award-winning performance as one of the original Broadways Billys, Toronto’s Kate Hennig currently starring in NY in the leading role of dance teacher Mrs. Wilkinson, and one of the Billys of the Chicago company, Cesar Corrales, also from Montreal."

In any case, always exciting to hear about the new productions of Billy that are springing up around the globe.

Chris Jones, theater blogger for the Chicago Tribune, thinks that Billy Elliot will end in Jan. 2011 in Chicago and move to Toronto.

Seems strange when Wicked, if I'm correct, stayed for 3 years in Chicago.

Apparently he doesn't have as much faith in our Billy as a green misunderstood lady.

I have more faith in ticket sales then I do in the number of Billys they can train for ALL the different productions...we are already close too working on fumes. That may be a major limitation.
