Mary Poppins - Ogunquit Playhouse

Post by kport »

BroadwayWorld has published a positive review of Mary Poppins at the OPH.

I have to quibble with one point: the children's voices are not poorly enunciated. The problem with hearing them has been mentioned elsewhere: the sound system at the Playhouse seems to be on the bright side, attenuating the upper ranges, making it difficult to hear higher voices against a rather overly amplified higher tones of the orchestra. Sitting at the front, with the high range speakers high up above, one can hear them just fine, but half way back the upper range sounds tend to blur with the amplified sound. The sound folk need to address this issue, which affected BETM as well.

The Ogunquit Playhouse and the Portsmouth (NH) Music Hall will co-produce a reprise of Mary Poppins in December. This is the second co-production this season: Grease was co-produced at both theatres this summer (they are about 20 miles from each other).

I think such enterprises are the future of regional productions of quality; cooperation, rather than competition, has to be better - in terms of quality and costs - than producing regional theater alone. Going it alone is no solution in a competitive world, and too many regional theaters are closing because they could not find a way forward: these theaters have recently closed, are under threat, or may close in the near future:

(It was announced today that the Royal Victoria Hall in Southborough will close in January.)

I cannot overemphasize the risks theaters face today. Our support is vital, whether as patron, volunteer, or more. I was privileged last night to attend a thank you dinner for the volunteers and crew who make Ogunquit possible: about 120 out of upwards of 200 who made Billy Elliot the Musical possible were able to attend. If you have a local theater, please do consider volunteering!
