Becoming Nancy

Post by atreyu »

I got to see the next-to-last performance of the World Premiere of Becoming Nancy and can recommend any future productions of it to every Billy Elliot superfan. Yes, there are some conflicts that are resolved way too easily, in the extreme case by merely singing a song and there is a touch of overemphasizing THE MESSAGE to ensure it is conveyed to the audience. But it is also artistic and engaging, enough so that faults generally are accepted. Themes of an initially highly disapproving Dad who comes around as well as a strong mother-son relationship will be intriguing points of comparison and contrast. And then to hear a few matching lines of dialog in Cockney rather than Geordie dialect is a hoot!

For this production, the leads gave generally excellent performances. Meaning the singing and acting were top notch. Dancing skills were quite varied and that made for some curious ensemble numbers when there were highly adept dancers side by side with and doing the same moves as those who could use more practice.

There are also a lot of similar elements in the story with TREVOR the Musical. Not to mention the description of The Boy in the Dress which might well have been a subtitle for Becoming Nancy. Might be really interesting if some combination of these were to show up Off Broadway at the same time or something like that.

Not sure how long this link will be valid, but for today you can read about Becoming Nancy here: https://alliancetheatre.org/production/ ... about-show
