Scenery Hire - BETM

Post by kport »

This popped up via a link on the MTI site....a firm that purports to offer BETM scenery for regional productions. The link to the BETM site is not working yet but it is for other regional shows (Mary Poppins; Les Mis).......It is the first notice I have seen about scenery for hire for regionals............

The above post was a mystery at the time. We now know that, about that time, the Tour's sets and costumes were sent back to the UK by the head office there. Hence this link is still dead. I wonder whether the Muny's and Ogunquits sets will be hired or sold to future regionals? I imagine much of it will be recycled into sets for future productions.

When I took the tour of the Ogunquit Playhouse last Sunday, they said that they do indeed store their used sets in a storage facility for use in future productions. They also rent them out to other nearby productions who need a particular set piece.

Thanks for that, Todd.

In fact, the physical scenery is not really important..the design of this set is, as it has to be adapted for each stage. If ever BETM comes back to the US, whether as a sit down production or Tour, I hope this design is considered. The use of lifts to raise scenery is no longer needed. (I am not a fan.) The Ogunquit set has proved that, in a way that the Second Tour did not quite manage, with its scaled down, man-moved set design. Indeed, when the VPT shuts for refurbishment, and if the show moves to another theatre, the Ogunquit designs could obviate the need for expensive subfloor elevated sets. The same would be true for a Broadway return.

Interestingly, the link from MTI's webpage to Chinchilla still shows the BETM set and costumes listed:

That is not the specific link; merely a preamble to the link. The link in question (cited on the page you cite) which gives precise information about the sets etc. - is a dead link, and has been for just over three months (the time the sets etc were shipped across the Pond).

I have examined this MTI website in its entirety and find it full of errors, false leads and general confusion.

Yes, I get the impression that it tends to be "a day late and a dollar short" about some information.

By the way, I did not mean to imply that what you posted was wrong, Bill. I just wanted to point out that MTI had not bothered to remove the page from their site, as they certainly should have done by now.
