City of Oconomowoc — The Oconomowoc High School Players' production of "Billy Elliot" has been nominated for 23 Tommy Awards, among the most of any OHS production.
Tommy Awards, which are given by the Madison-based Overture Center for the Arts, honor excellence in musical theater in more than 70 high schools in 23 Wisconsin counties, according to the organization's website, overture.org. The award winners will be announced in May 2017.
"The vocal direction of this show was wonderful and really demonstrated just how much time and effort was put forth to ensure this was a sound production," one reviewer wrote about OHS' performance. "Overall, the music was incredibly professional, and it seemed as though the vocal director did not skimp out on any of the major details needed to ensure the performers were ready for this very vocally challenging production."
The production was nominated for the following awards: three for outstanding lead performers, five for outstanding supporting performers, outstanding dance performance, outstanding musical, outstanding ensemble, outstanding overall design, outstanding direction, two for outstanding musical direction, outstanding orchestra, outstanding choreography, two for outstanding stage management, outstanding scenic design, outstanding lighting design, outstanding costume design and outstanding sound design, according to a news release from OHS Theater Director Thomas Klubertanz.
For the seventh time in eight years, the OHS Players have been nominated for the Outstanding Musical Tommy Award, according to Klubertanz.
"The orchestra pushed this production to a higher level," another reviewer wrote in comments about the production. "The iconic music of 'Billy Elliot' was given a passionate, smart energy by this group of musicians."
