California Theatre of the Performing Arts - Cancelled

Post by kport »

California Theatre of the Performing Arts' Facebook has posted this:

http://californiatheatre.net/Billy_Elliot.html A one day appearance in a theatre with 1700+ seats.

It has yet to be posted on MTI's licensing site. In fact, only one (Kalamazoo May 4 - May 26, 2018) new US regional is mentioned for all of 2018.

CTPA lists several other 2018 Broadway musicals with limited show dates; at least one is currently on tour; the other was recently on tour.

CTPA does not appear to self produce Broadway Musicals, judging by its past shows.

It will be interesting to learn what this is all about. Let's leave it by quoting Churchill: 'It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.'

This production will be produced by Worldwide Theatricals. They appear to do all their shows for just one day only at California Theatre of the Performing Arts.

Here's the BETM listing on their website:

Reading through its Facebook site, indeed all shows appear to be just two performances. Some pretty impressive shows are done - Hunchback is no easy feat to pull off. Is it pure AmDram undertaken by volunteers, I thought? Then I found this entry, posted by the theatre on FB, in response to a question:
'Worldwide Theatricals There is pay for the leads, and stipends for ensemble, + everyone gets to participate in cast tickets sales revenue sharing, which earns additional money for cast members.'
https://www.facebook.com/WorldwideTheatricals/

I am baffled by how they can do this. The business model seems impossible, unless there is substantial financial backing from other than ticket sales.

The theater is in San Bernardino. There are a couple of experienced Billys residing in that general area.

This production has been cancelled. BETM has been replaced on the calendar with "Little Shop of Horrors":
