Palace Theatre (Melbourne) Demolition Proposed

Post by porschesrule »

Not really specifically Billy Elliot related, but I thought it would be of interest and this thread seems to be the best fit...

Young and old alike are up in arms over the proposed demolition of Melbourne’s Palace Theatre to make way for a 5-star luxury hotel and apartment complex.

No. As I mentioned, my post wasn't specifically BETM related.

The theatre where BETM AUS played is called Her Majesty's Theatre.

I hope the petitioners can have it granted Heritage Listed status. Too often such buildings are torn down for purely monetary gain. When one considers that eminent theaters such as the Boston's Opera House and Proctor's in Schenectady have been brought back to life by such enthusiastic groups, one can see that the effort is truly worth it. The Palace Theatre is truly historic ..... it is three years older than Ford's Theater in Washington, DC. A country as young as Australia should make an effort to save such old and treasured buildings, especially one which is still a popular venue.

Imagine if Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen succumbed to huge offers to sell the VPT to developers..............as far as I can tell, it is not a listed building. Would there be an outcry?

The Palace "theatre"is where I first saw Hair in 1968. However it has been a disco for most of the last 40 years and not part of the live show theatres.

It seems a little pointless to include here at all
