A continuation of my review from June 4 in San Diego.

Although the CYC program notes indicate this is his first musical theatre experience, Aaron was absolutely sensational playing the role. Aaron's expressions and actions were spot on without any trace of nervousness or any awkwardness of trying to act a part that is often found among 12-year-olds. One measure of Aaron's acting - more generally for any Billy - is the extent to which the audience hangs on his every word and action in Act 2. This was very much the case for Aaron this evening.

Aaron's experience as a dancer is quite evident, not just in staying precisely on beat with his moves, but executing them with interpretation and even some measure of flair. Oh sure, this wasn't perfection; that cannot be expected at 12 and in his 5th and final show for this run. But much of the time, it was evident that Aaron's ability exceeds the choreography asked of him and limited practice time available for this production.

Lastly, Aaron sings just fine. It is not currently at the spectacular level as is his Billy portrayal or his dancing ability, but neither is it at all weak. I was able to chat briefly with Aaron's mom after the show and she mentioned her husband being a singer. Although Aaron had not done any singing performances previously, perhaps that is in the genes.

All in all, I really hope this is just the beginning for Aaron. If he has the desire, his Billy career can go as far as he wants it to. While his parents were not disapproving the way Jackie Elliot is in Act 1, Aaron landing the Billy role was a surprise to them. So in this respect the potential for a successful future in theatre for Aaron could turn out to be a case of life imitating art. Here's hoping it comes true.
