The Audience - on Broadway

How exactly do you play Thatcher WITHOUT being a caricature??? With her I'm not sure it's possible. That said I've seen that in other reviews... I'm wondering if it's an American view on her that is influencing the view(she's still viewed pretty positively here).

Just a reminder this is coming up tomorrow evening, a one-time only event in the US. At $20 a ticket this is way cheaper than seeing the show on Broadway.

Just returned from seeing The Audience in Portsmouth, NH. About 100 or so in the theatre. I thought that it translated well to the screen (it was recorded in London, and was not from Broadway).

One mystery, unless I missed something - there was no Tony Blair character (nor was he mentioned in the end credits). Did I miss him, or was he left out, for some reason?

Helen Mirren was extraordinary, as were all the cast. She and Stephen Daldry gave an informative talk at the end.

I went to the Fathom Events screening tonight, bringing my mom along. We had a good sized audience, way more than for BETM Live. It almost looked like a disaster at first, in that we had no sound in the theater. The first 15 minutes of the play were silent. Fortunately the projectionist was able to get the sound working and then restart the show from the top. Thank goodness for DVRs.

Having seen the show in New York just three months ago, much of it was fresh in my mind. Still I enjoyed seeing it a second time. Also there are a few small differences. The biggest change is the Broadway version has a coronation scene at the end of Act I, which was breathtaking. I missed seeing it in tonight's London version.

I loved Haydn Gwynne as Thatcher in the London version. Per my review from March, I didn't care for Judith Ivey in the Broadway version of this role. Haydn's Thatcher was strong and dignified, whereas Judith Ivey was too much of a caricature.

Seeing Helen Mirren's performance again so soon after the Tony Awards makes me appreciate all over again what an incredible actress she is.

The Q&A interview with Stephen Daldry and Helen Mirren after the show was a nice bonus.

The Tony Blair character was not in the West End production I saw but has since been added according to this:

"Blair was not included in The Audience's original London run two years ago, but the character has now been added to the West End production."

Thanks for that. I wonder why he was omitted back then? Heath was left out, too, but at least he was mentioned. Perhaps Blair was too much of a contentious figure several years ago? It was great to see Haydn portray Maggie so well - she is so tall and overpowering that she seems to loom over the queen, rather like the Maggie puppet does in MCMT.
