2014 Tony Awards

Post by CJ-Rochester »

In a move similar to what the Oscars have done, the Tony Awards committee this year has changed the rules to allow more than the traditional number of nominees in the four major show categories (musical, play, musical revival, play revival).

I like this, especially since it's only a slight increase, and not a virtual doubling to 8-10 like the Oscars. Sounds good!

2014 Tonys

Post by kport »

According to this New York Times' article, this year's Tonys are anything but a slam dunk. The pickings seem unusually thin. I was particularly intrigued by the final sentences:

Yet none can compare with another musical that opened this spring that has the best sales of all so far: “Les Misérables.” But that, of course, is a revival.

Perhaps Broadway is in need of another surefire Tony winner - in the form of a revival. And we know what that one is!

According to the article, "Aladdin" is a new musical, not a revival. But it is another adaptation from a movie, of which there have been many, including BETM, in recent years.

BroadwayWorld has been running a "30 Days of the Tony Awards" series spotlighting the best Tony Awards-related moments of all time. Monday's entry focused on one of the recent big battles for Best Musical with BILLY ELLIOT versus NEXT TO NORMAL. Included here are videos of the performances and acceptance speeches from that magical night. :D

Thanks for the link. That certainly brings back fond memories. It was the only Tony Awards ceremony I have ever actually attended, and what an evening it was! In the balcony where we were, there was a block of BETM fans on one side of the aisle, and a block of Next to Normal fans on the other side. It was almost like being at a pep rally. No Joke!!

Sam Poon's Facebook page also has a photo, taken at the same time as the one above, of Noah, Sam and Samantha Blair Cutler casting ballots. Nice to see Billy, Michael and Debbie reunited!
