Sting's 'The Last Ship' is headed for Broadway

Post by kport »

Singer-songwriter Sting's new musical "The Last Ship" has found a nice berth on Broadway.

Producer Jeffrey Seller said Wednesday that the show -- inspired by Sting's memories of growing up in a shipbuilding community in northeast England -- will start performances Sept. 30 at the Neil Simon Theatre. Opening night will be Oct. 26.

In fact, this musical is debuting at The Neil Simon Theater, right this moment, with several BETM actors in the cast. Break a leg!

Sting himself will perform songs from "The Last Ship" this Friday evening on PBS's Great Performances. It airs at 9pm on most PBS stations. Check your local listings if interested.

Sting's The Last Ship

Post by kport »

Pop star and composer Sting (aka Gordon Sumner) expounds his views about not spoiling his children, and describes his own hardscrabble childhood in a dysfunction Geordie family, and his own disapproving father, in this interesting article:

His musical The Last Ship, had its world premiere in Chicago last week.

This contains a great video about the musical:

There were three separate threads for this show. I have merged them all together in this one thread.

What do Billy Elliot, Kinky Boots, The Full Monty, and The Last Ship have in common? All tell stories set in British working class communities that are under threat of economic collapse. This article in the current OUT magazine talks about Sting's new musical, which is set in a community very much like that of Billy Elliot's. Just change coal mining to ship building.

After a UK premiere and a Chicago theatre run, The Last Ship – or, as most people know it “the Sting musical” – has made it to Broadway. The show is in previews this week and officially opens on 26 October.

Craig Bennett also. It's practically a BETM Tour reunion. ;)

Quite a useful review:

In case you missed it before, PBS has a great concert performance of the music, here:

(IMHO, Sting would be a great Jackie.)

The Last Ship is having its first performance on Broadway, right now, at the Neil Simon Theater. Break a leg!

Zoweeeee!

A virtual font of information.

Sting was also on James Lipton on Bravo this last week.

I didn't even realize how intertwined BETM is with this new Broadway production at a theatre where I am pretty sure I attended performances of (couldn't figure out titles) back in 1980, 81, 82, 83 (so long ago that in my 30s, so many BETM fanatics had not even been born).

I saw a 2nd cast incarnation of Torch Song Trilogy. Not with Matthew Broderick and other to-be famous folk back then. My 1-degree of Kevin Bacon moment was at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 1980 (Album). One degree of Bacon in this case was about 2 feet away from the front row seats where I was sat.
