BETM London hits 3 million milestone

Post by ERinVA »

According to the Billy Elliot London facebook page, last night the show reached the milestone of 3 million people having seen the show.

I think they are counting tickets sold. Of course, sometimes people who are holding tickets do not show up, but I suppose a ticket count is the closest they can get. They have no idea, of course, how many tickets have actually been used by single individuals.

This question probably does not belong here but all that talk about closing of the Chicago production and large theatres has made me wonder : What is the capacity of the Victoria Palace, does anyone know?
It would also be interesting to try and calculate aproximatelly how many people are in the theatre each night since we know that it was 3000000 on 13 Oct.

Victoria Palace
Characteristics The domed auditorium seats 1,550 people. A sliding roof helps ventilate the auditorium during the intervals, which was a novelty feature in the days of heavy smoking during performances.

Oriental Theatre Chicago
Three levels hold 2,200 plush seats under a massive domed ceiling rimmed with larger-than-life seahorses and goddesses. Painted columns and colorful plasterwork add to the look of a gaudy Asian temple.

Thank you for the quick reply Ellen. Of course, as we all know a very large part of the audiences of West End and Broadway are tourists who are there for a few days and just want to see a play. This is not the case with Chicago or most other cities.

I also did a bit of math and if I'm correct there is an average of aproximatelly 1300 people per night at the VP. Not bad for a theatre that holds 1550.
Then again I might be wrong. Math was my worst subject at school... :? :? :?

Plenty of people visit Chicago as tourists too, but not nearly as many as visit NY or London, and I believe they don't think of going to shows in Chicago in quite the same way they do when they plan a trip to London or NY.
