BETM Choreography Inspired by Well Known Dances/Ballet

Post by mint002 »

Hi all,

One thing struck me as I watched BETM--there are many steps included in the choreography that reminded me of famous ballets and dances. I'm sure Peter Darling was inspired by many of these, but I really enjoyed his "homages" (if they were in fact, inspired by these ballets, or others). As expected, there was lots of inspired choreography from Swan Lake of course...but also some others as well.

The attitude promenade where Billy's ballet talent is apparent to Mrs Wilkinson, the attitude reminded me of one demonstrated by Adam Cooper (who played the role of adult Billy in the movie), at 0:45:

In Solidarity, the Ballet Girls lined up, hop on one foot in an arabesque position through the policemen line, similar to the Giselle ballet in this clip, at 6:36:

The part where Billy & the Ballet Girls link arms, in criss-cross fashion in Solidarity, while standing in front of the policeman line. The line splits up and each side hops to the sides of the stage--reminiscent of the Swan Lake's famous pas de quatre:

The end of Solidarity (and also at the end of Electricity) where Billy does the dizzying spinning sequence, reminded me of the Le Corsaire spin combination demonstrated brilliantly by Angel Corella, at 0:38 here:

The gorgeous Swan Lake music that plays during the Dream Ballet in BETM, is of course, from the Swan Lake ballet, in the following link beginning at 1:20:

There were lots of swan arms from the Ballet Girls, a la "Black Swan" ;)

I'm sure there are contemporary/tap choreography also inspired by well known classics, I'm just not that well versed in those genres....what did the dancing in BETM remind you of?

Thanks, mint. :D That's a nice compilation that must have taken quite a bit of work.

It didn't take as much time as expected--and I was amazed at how I felt inspired and nostalgic for so many different ballets while watching BETM multiple times!
