AUS - Green Room Awards Association

Post by Gavroche »

'Melbourne’s premier arts award ceremony’
Herald Sun – May 23, 2003
The Green Room Awards play a vital role in Melbourne. Once a year, in our ceremony, we reassure our premier theatre makers that their contribution is essential to the cultural health of our city, nay, our country, our industry.

The Green Room Awards seek-out excellence on the Melbourne professional stage. In addition, we reward, encourage and celebrate that excellence by producing an awards ceremony that allows peers and public alike to come together and applaud. A Green Room Award is not a popularity award: we are peers celebrating our peers. Because of the steadfast vigilance of our 6 panels (comprising over 60 qualified, experienced and learned industry professionals); Cabaret, Dance, Drama, Fringe, Music Theatre and Opera, a Green Room Award has become the most significant accolade an artist performing in Melbourne can receive. Indeed, a nomination now carries prodigious biographical weight for performing and technical artists in all 6 disciplines

Congratulations Billy Elliot The Musical.

I was lucky enough to obtain 2 passes to tonight's 2008 Green Room Awards so along with BillyAddict we headed off to The Playhouse at The Arts Centre. Our seats were directly behind the "Billy Elliot Row" so we had a great view of the stage. Tonight's compere was SBS' Julia Zimero, a VERY funny lady who rattled off more one - liners than we could keep count of. BETM was nominated for 12 Awards, and as posted earlier the results were :-

Best Male Lead : Michael Dameski, Dayton Tavares, Rhys Kosakowski, Josh Denyer, Josh Waiss Gates
Best Male in a Supporting role : Joel Slater, Thomas Doherty, Landen Hale-Brown, Liam Dodds
Best Direction :
Best Production
Best Choreography
Best Actress in a Leading role : Genevieve Lemon

Gen gave a very emotional speech. Joel Slater did himself proud with his acceptance speech on behalf of all the Michaels who were on stage with him. All 5 Billys presented parts of their acceptance speech. For every award that BETM won there was long, loud applause from the entire audience which was made up of theatre, film, music, television personalities as well as members of the general public.

Congratulations to all.

Perhaps this can be incorporated with the thread previously posted by Nikkie.
