Maybe this is a clue as to how more people can be attracted to Billy Elliot The Musical. Promotions should go out from the downtown areas of the tour cities and into the ethnic areas where there are family relationships like the Elliot family. Giant signs like the one in Boston have their place getting the attention of the white-collar downtown workers, but they are missed by the blue-collar workers in the ethnic neighborhoods. Performances by Billy, Grandma, Jackie, Tony and the Ballet Girls in the neighborhood venues would show the familiarity of the family structure of the show. Videos of "Grandma's Song" and "He Could Shine" could be shown to help overcome the idea that BETM is just a children's show about a boy who wants to dance. The serious theater side of the show will appeal to many adults in the inner cities who currently ignore the show.

"George's line "we'll be supportin' the arts" got a loud applause at all 4 weekend shows! Wisconsin has had it's problems with a conservative governor battling labor unions. That is probably why there were record crowds reading the posters posted in the lobby that detail the history of Maggie Thatcher's battle with the mine unions."

This defines two more groups that are the best fans of Billy Elliot The Musical; those who support serious theater in many cities around the country and those members of unions who are currently under attack around the country.

The patrons of the arts are well aware of the arrival of BETM in their hometown, so no additional promotion is needed. But the embattled union members around the country could use the inspiration, and they often miss not only that the show is about a union struggle but that BETM is playing in their city. Promotions should be aimed a union members.
