For those who are already familiar with the region’s major theater companies, the ceremony showcased many smaller outfits worthy of attention. Matthew Dean, reprising a number from Berkeley Playhouse’s “Billy Elliot,” gave a ballet performance of astonishing maturity and grace. Remember this kid’s name. (Minutes later, he won a TBA Award for that part.)

Following in the path of several other former Billys, Matthew Dean will play the role of Mush in NEWSIES at the Phoenix Theatre (where he played Billy one year ago), from November 15 to December 31, 2017.
Matthew, a California native, is currently in 8th grade. As a dancer and gymnast, Matthew has performed and competed extensively, winning awards and recognitions including Junior Mr. Dance of California. In 2016, Matthew made his musical theater debut as Billy Elliot in Billy Elliot in his hometown of San Jose. Matthew went on to reprise the role of Billy at Ocean State Theatre in Rhode Island, Phoenix Theatre in Arizona, Berkeley Playhouse in California and Cape Rep Theatre in Massachusetts. Matthew is thrilled to be back at Phoenix Theatre and to share the stage with his little brother, Joey.
He will be joined by his brother, Joey, in the role of Les:
Joey, a 10 year old California native, started dancing at age 2 at his mother’s dance studio. After making his stage debut at age 3, Joey has continued to perform and compete in dance. Some of Joey’s recognitions in dance include the role of Fritz in The Nutcracker, a scholarship to The Joffrey Ballet School in New York and the title of Master Dance of California. Inspired by watching his older brother in musical theater, Joey began studying voice, piano and guitar at age 8. Joey is excited to make his professional musical theater debut with Phoenix Theatre.
