I think the production falls into the category of amateur productions similar to those of the Billy Youth Theatre. It certainly doesn't look like a "regional" type of production similar to those being produced in the US. Once BETM makes it into the catalog for school productions here, you are going to see more stuff like this. However, I expect that there won't be a bunch of female Michaels, even in these amateur productions.

I wonder whether they have a license to produce this - schools and amateur theaters must hold a license to produce a public play. I will concede this point - the filming of it seems above the norm for a school. More like a college production.

That said, this being Russia, I would imagine such capitalist concepts as licensing may be treated a tad less stringently than in the West.

I think they were forced to make this change because of that crazy Russian LGBT propaganda law

Found these pages which seem to refer to this performance, and imply it is at professionally organised for young people with previously recognised talent. I am not sure these links will work, I was mucking about searching in google translate. I think it is brave to produce this story in any form in Russia.

(Thats the third go at getting the link to work -edited link)

and for anyone who can muddle through the original site in Russian

I'm not sure if it's a high school or college, I don't speak Russian.
Here's the website with some pictures:

(I had to use the url shortener, because the forum engine did not let me post the original url address, as it has russian characters in it,)

Let's return to uplifting performances. One to cleanse the soul and uplift the spirit, after the Russian video:

Here is a remarkable video from Young Performers of London, reprising a scene from the Billy Youth Theatre production (memo to London/MTI: bring back the BYT now):

Mrs Wilkinson is just 15 - extraordinary!

Thanks Kport. That was very enjoyable. Quite an impressive performance for a 15 year old! She has many of the right nuances of the character and could rival some of the other Mrs. Wilkinsons I have seen. Wow!

To be fair, a LOT of effort evidently went into this production, even if their singing English was much more US than UK (let alone Geordie). But they emasculated the show in too many ways, even ignoring its "Russian political correctness". I feel as if my soul has been sucked out. I need to see a REAL production - quickly!
