Rhys Kosakowski competes for McDonalds Ballet Scholarship

Post by andrewcraig »

I was shocked to find all the post of Rhys have disappearedWhy is this so?

http://mosman-daily.whereilive.com.au/n ... the-stage/

EIGHT young ballet dancers, including one of the boys who danced the role of Billy Elliot, have been chosen to compete for the prestigious McDonald’s Ballet Scholarship.

The dancers will take to the Opera House stage on Sunday to compete for the $18,000 scholarship - one of the highlights of the McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod.

The scholarship is open to dancers aged 16 to 19 and the finalists include Evan Loudon who grew up in Neutral Bay and recently featured as Prince Charming in the ballet Cinderella at Glen St Theatre.

Another finalist is Rhys Kosakowski, of Macquarie Hills, who was one of the dancers who featured as Billy in the Sydney production of the musical Billy Elliot.

However, eisteddfod spokeswoman Jennie Lees said the dance competition was not all about winning scholarships.

She said, for many young dancers, the eisteddfod was an invaluable confidence booster and educational experience.

“Everyone learns and whether they win or lose, every competitor gains confidence that will help them whatever path they follow,” she said.

Ms Lees said a fine example of a young dancer developing confidence through the eisteddfod was Claire Zalunardo, 8, of Cremorne Point, who this year competed for the first time.

Claire danced before a live audience to win the category of classical ballet solo.

Claire’s mother Erika Westley said her daughter had been a shy, quiet girl whose confidence had grown through ballet.

“She wasn’t too nervous going into the competition because she had learnt the piece so well,” she said.

“Claire was so chuffed when she won.”

Former ballerina Marilyn Jones and David McAllister, artistic director of the Australian Ballet, will help judge the ballet scholarship at 6.30pm on Sunday.

Bookings: 9250 7777.

Here is Rhys's thread right here. http://billyelliottheforum.me.uk/forum/ ... f=45&t=149 Nothing has been removed from it. Remember, this forum did not begin until March of 2009, which was after the Australian productions had closed.

Rhys Kosakowski gains professional dance contract

Post by andrewcraig »

New contract for Billy Elliot dancer
06 Dec, 2010 04:00 AM
NEWCASTLE performer Rhys Kosakowski has gone from Billy Elliot to ballet dancer and beyond.

Kosakowski, who made his debut as Billy in Sydney in 2007, was the only actor to play the lead role in both the Sydney and Melbourne seasons of the hit show.

He finished up with the show in 2009 after growing too tall for the child role that won him a swag of awards.

After Billy Elliot, Kosakowski, now 16, began full-time training at the National College of Dance with Marie Walton-Mahon and studies many styles of dance.

He will join fellow dancer Sharlene Roberts, pictured, for a performance of the Rachmaninoff Suite as a tribute to Walton-Mahon at the school’s end-of-year concert and her farewell on Saturday .

‘‘Everyone is training so hard because Marie has done so much for our careers,’’ Kosakowski said.

The new artistic director for the National College of Dance and the Marie Walton-Mahon Academy, Brett Morgan, has been working alongside Walton-Mahon for the past six months to ensure a smooth transition into the 2011 season.

Morgan has recognised Kosakowski’s talent and has offered him a professional contract with his all new MOD Dance Company, based in Melbourne, for 2011.

‘‘Everything I ever wanted was to have an affiliated dance company for my students here in Newcastle to aspire to be contracted to after they graduate. I am delighted they will now have that with Brett and MOD,’’ Walton-Mahon said.

Walton-Mahon’s daughter Veronica Mahon has also been offered a full contract with MOD.

After 36 consecutive years of producing her well-known end-of-year concerts, Marie Walton-Mahon is putting the finishing touches on her final ever A Night to Remember.

Tickets are sold out for the December 11 evening event, but are available for the 10.30am dress rehearsal from the Civic Theatre.

would have liked to include the photo with this article, but forgot the forum does not allow.
