Tessa tweeted this after today's matinee:

OMG Dayton's harness got stuck during Dream Ballet and he was left dangling there...on his birthday!! TOO funny!

To add to this, a fan from Australia who is in NY to see how Dayton and Michael do on the Broadway stage wrote:

Unfortunately Older Billy couldn’t gracefully catch Dayton has it came to next part like I saw last night, but that’s because there was something strange going on with the height of Dayton as he spun around the stage. When it came time for Older Billy to stop and spin Dayton the spot, he had to duck under him and start the spinning... and then he didn’t start rising. Older Billy was quick to realise how to save it by moving to the back corner and raising his arm to Dayton’s level and striking his pose. The audience still loved it. Only when it came time for Billy to lower... he didn’t. He remained suspended in the air. Older Billy was doing everything he could to lift him and release enough tension to unhook him from the wire. Unfortunately his was just the bit too high. I saw the stage hands looking horrified just off stage. (I was sitting angled enough to see in) As the conductor could extend the music for no more and it was drawing to its close, 7 stage hands ran on to try and help him down. They couldn’t do it. They had to make an announcement for “technical difficulties” and close the curtain. Dayton loved it; he had a huge grin on his face and was enjoying himself. Just before the curtain covered them they released him from the wire and the audience laughed and cheered. 2 minutes later they raised the curtain with Billy in final position in front of his father. An unfortunately event, but it didn’t faze Dayton in the slightest which was good.

Poor Dayton, what a birthday present! Glad it worked out ok in the end. :)

Eeeks! How frustrating it must be for those involved with the show to have to deal with things going wrong!

Reminds me of Kate Hennig's recent blog post on March 2nd, where she wrote about different instances when things didn't go quite right during the show. Both her examples and the example from Dayton's performance today all go to show how hard people have to work to make each show run smoothly. It's pretty amazing when you think about it!

Glad to hear that Dayton wasn't fazed and got a laugh out of the whole situation.

What a champ!!

When the BETM crew told Dayton today they had a birthday surprise for him, he didn't think they meant he'd be logging more "flight" time than usual today.

I hope that without a doubt that the safety of this situation is taken care of. I have been somewhat concerned before for the safety of these boys from time to time. I know , I know, everyone, that the safety issue with this is watched closely by all on stage...but I have always felt it is a tad bit dangerous in case of failure of the components....the effect of the flying for the play is for sure a highlight of the show....I am sure Easton pays very close attention for the safety of the Billy's during the flying part of the show just in case.......
