Posh Boy Natural !

Post by Real Geordie »

If (surely when) BETM is resurrected in the UK, this young lad should audition for the role of posh boy. He would need to get over his phobia of northern accents first though (although in this case the accent is quite mild and easily understood).

I had never even thought about it before, but on a visit to London last week, having a few pints in a riverside pub (labelled the “oldest” pub on the Thames, like all the others) a local asked if I knew what various acronyms meant. How we got onto this topic I have no idea . One of these was the word posh. Apparently this derived from Port Out Starboard Home. Neither of us could work out why it would be better to have the same view on the outbound and return journey, or why this would give status. Probably a load of old cobblers, but who knows ?

Here is an article on the origin of "posh". It does not support the "Port Out Starboard Home" explanation.
