This is a great article, from Bournemouth University. It is interesting, but not surprising, since the show has ended, to note this comment:
“Other than Project B and the Billy Elliot phenomenon which is kind of passed now, absolutely nothing is being done ballet-wise to stop these stereotypes.”

"Don't be daft; I wear me shorts!"

The "boys in tights" idea is part of the problem: Lots of boys will not wear tights. But they also don't have to. Most of the photos on the Boys in Tights blog show boys wearing shorts.

Here's a nice story about a teenage boy from Staten Island who was bullied in the past and now dances six hours a day to make his dreams come true. The reporter compares his story to Billy Elliot.

Here's a wonderful story. Scott Gormley, whose son Jackson is a dancer, decided to create “Danseur,” a film that highlights the resistance male dancers often face from their family and friends.

Here is more info about the film:

Here's the actual trailer for the film:

There is always an answer to such stereotypical judgements. None is better than this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFNKiFitu8Q

Too bad this clip omits the next few exchanges which (if memory serves) goes something like this:

Billy: 'Lads do (pause - questioning look) wrestling, Da?'

Dad: 'Don't start on me, son..'

Genius, Lee Hall!

Here's a heartwarming story of a young boy who started dancing after seeing BETM. He was bullied for his interest in ballet, but now gets the last laugh. He is about to dance with the Royal Ballet.
