Favorite Treble Choirs

Post by tankntonic »

I know many american Forum members are fans of the London based vocal group" Libera".
They have posted on twitter that they will be appearing on the Tonight Show next Thursday.

I shall certainly tune in to watch this. It is rare to see Libera live, or on tv, though its recordings are legion.

Perhaps Forum members would also like to hear the Escolania de Montserrat choir on its first ever US Tour next March. The Escolania is possibly the oldest extant boys choir in the world, predating the Weiner SangerKnaben by many centuries. Unlike Libera, their primary function is to serve to sing daily in the basilica of Montserrat, tucked in a mountain near Barcelona.

They will sing at St Thomas 5th Avenue on March 13th, itself the home of one of the best church boy choirs in the world. The Escolania's first ever visit the US is a noteworthy event.

There was a Christmas special featuring Libera at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh, Ireland, on PBS last week during the seasonal fundraiser that all the stations do. I managed to catch it twice, and thoroughly enjoyed it both times.

Both the CD and the DVD of this performance are now available on Amazon here:

The choristers of Libera, by the way, kport, also serve as the choir for the parish church, St. Philip's of Norbury, in Norbury, a bit south of London. So, no, they aren't the Monkees of the Boy Choir world. ;)

Wow...great info!

Will catch "Libera" for sure this next week.

Escolania de Montserrat one of my most favored boys choral groups (I'm a professional singer and long time choral member myself). They are as power house a group as you'll ever hear. If one is clued into concert schedule would dearly like to know.

Catch The YouTube with Sergio Dalma, "Em dones Forca" in duet with top Escolania soloist, Lluis Travesset, with the choir back up. Lluis Travesset will knock your socks off.

LLuis can be heard sing Arvo Part's moving 'Vater Unser' here. One of the best ever.

Do try to catch this choir on its brief tour to NYC/NJ/Washington DC on 13-15 March. You will be moved beyond description.

Even better, from London take a cheap flight to Barcelona, spend a day in that amazing city, see Gaudi's astonishing cathedral (where Lluis and this choir sang for the Pope at its consecration) Sagrada Familia, and take a day trip to Montserrat and hear the choir sing the Virolai.
