And what about Geordie?

Post by ERinVA »

Here's an article from the Guardian that talks about actors doing bad accents. I am surprised that BETM didn't show up in there, as many UK people have claimed that what you hear onstage in London isn't really Geordie at all. I wouldn't know, of course, so it has never bothered me, either in London or in NY, but this is an interesting article nevertheless.

This, to me, is theatrical snobbery.
Personally I think that the accents we get on stage in BETM are fine. They may not be wholly accurate but they help get the message across and create the right atmosphere.

It shouldn't be a Geordie accent either! The Geordie accent is heard around the River Tyne (generally north of the River). In Easington (County Durham) there accent will be different and is certainly not a Geordie accent.

It is done OK in the show but it is easy to tell which cast members are from the North East and in particular County Durham.
