Differences in Staging the Many Versions of BETM

Post by Musical Fanatic »

I' am curious about how people who have seen the shows in London and New York feel about the differences in staging.

There are lots of comments about the differences scattered throughout the reviews of the NY show, so you might want to read through those threads. http://www.billyelliottheforum.me.uk/fo ... m.php?f=28

There is also an archived thread called "New York, New York" which contains some comments of relevance. Here's the link: http://www.billyelliottheforum.me.uk/fo ... ifferences

Enjoy reading, and welcome to the forum, Musical Fanatic. :D

I was not sure where to post this – this looked like a good place.
I have a keen interest in the differences between the London production and the US production. I have seen New York , Chicago and the tour but NEVER London (a dream of mine). Some things I have picked up on are , the accent being toned down, and the language also. The tour toned down the language even further, sad to say! I am sure there are many other differences. One thing that I have noticed in viewing video clips of the London Billys is that many of them are what has been referred to as “Street Billy’s” . Hopping -pirouettes and a lot of hip hop and gymnastic moves – which makes for a very different “Electricity” It is something I have never seen from the 12 Billys I have seen. The only one I have seen to be significantly different from the others was Lex who added a lot of gymnastic moves to his “Electricity”. I must say I do enjoy watching these London clips but I realize seeing them dance “live” would be so much better.

As BETM expands into different countries and regions, questions arise about staging the different versions of the show. Since this thread already existed for differences between NY and London, I thought it made sense to expand it for discussion of the differences among all the various productions that are beginning to happen now.
