In many parts of England in 1984; yes, they would; less so today as increased affluence has changed many societal norms. Whether very young children understood their meanings is a different matter - but they would have heard them used quite often by older boys and, in many cases, parents and other adults. The English have retained a somewhat livelier use of Anglo-Saxon invective than their (perhaps more puritanical) American cousins! Even George Washington had to issue an order to his troops to avoid the profanity which crept in during the War of Independence.
