Most Influential 2017: ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ winner Lex Ishimoto destined for greatness

During the season 14 finale of “So You Think You Can Dance,” in September, other contestants on the Fox prime-time dance competition smiled big, gushed about their experience and shed some tears.

The performer who would ultimately win the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer” was calm and matter-of-fact.

“I’m a really, really boring and dry human being,” he said.

Despite the self-critique, Lex Ishimoto, 19, of Irvine consistently wowed the “So You Think You Can Dance” judges and the TV audience. His impressive technique, high-flying acrobatics and inventive choreography showed it can take more than personality to win.

As a diehard fan of So You Think You Can Dance , I am thrilled that Lex is back as one of this season's All-Stars. I saw him on last Monday's show dancing with one of the Top 20 girl contestants who unfortunately didn't make the judges' final cut. But I am eagerly anticipating seeing lots more from Lex.

He was just 13 years old in 2012 when he last performed as Billy Elliot, which he did just under 100 times. One of the originating Billys on the US Tour, since then Lex has been one of the most active performers of the past Billys. See what he's been doing via the update to his profile called "Life After Billy" .

Boston Ballet's first virtual season concludes with a stream on May 13-23, 2021 that includes an original choreographic piece by Lex Ishimoto called What Happens If... This is Lex's first work for a professional ballet company and pulls inspiration from the title. Featuring contemporary vocabulary, Ishimoto created this piece to demonstrate ballet's relevance while honoring classical foundations.
