Billy Elliot, 2005
Although Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and Lionel Bart’s Oliver! have strong claims to be the greatest British musical, Billy Elliot gets my vote. Raw, gritty and deeply affecting, Lee Hall’s adaptation of his movie about a northern lad struggling to become a ballet dancer during the miners’ strike works a treat and Stephen Daldry’s production, with a fine score by Elton John, fizzes with energy.
