9 to 5

Post by Billy Whiz »

It's the first preview of 9 to 5 tonight. It will be interesting to read reviews from any members that go and see it. It is being tipped as a major competitior to Billy for Tony awards.

I tried to rush tonight so I could make a fair Tony prediction, but they sold the last ticket to the person in front of me. :P Will try again over the weekend...

I've just read the reviews on BWW and it would seem that Billy has genuine competition for the Tonys. It's going to be an interesting night on June 7th.

I can't help but be a little pleased.... though its not over yet, don't want to get too confident! The Tonys have made some odd choices in the past...

Personally, I thought 9 to 5 was cute, but did not live up to the hype. BWW people were raving about it so much that my expectations were indeed high, and it just didn't deliver. I will say that the three leads gave great performances, especially Allison Janney, and I give major props to both the set and costume designers. (Though I saw an alarming amount of Banana Republic wrap dresses in the finale that I found kind of strange.) Overall as a show though, the story didn't really do anything for me. Yes, there is the whole girl power female equality theme thats easy to root for and get behind, but the only reason you do is because of Allison's phenomenal delivery. IMO, she made an average show slightly above average. I kind of equate it with Legally Blonde, except less catchy. Except for the title song obviously. And Stephanie J Block's "Get Out and Stay Out", which is sung beautifully, but is a strange 2nd to last song. The only reason I might see it again is for Allison.

Oh my! "Hate mail" barely describes it! I was almost in tears of laughter when I read this: "Ms. Block is rather wooden."
