Accessing UK telly - from the US - without a VPN

Post by kport »

Often times, we colonials are told that so-and-so will be performing this-and-that on some UK telly programme, at xxx time on yyy Day. So we frantically load a VPN and try to access IPlayer, with limited success. So we await the episode being uploaded to Youtube by one of our UK friends.

Those days may be over! They are!! If you have a Roku player (which many do), there is a new app called UKTV that, for the princely sum of $1.99 a month, gives immediate access to live UK broadcasts on the BBC, ITV, Dave and most of the channels that are seen on Freeview. You see the live broadcast, including adverts for Argos and Thomson Holidays, just as you would in Cleethorpes or Christchurch or Carlisle. I have to assume that Roku has vetted this enterprise, as it handles the monthly sub charge via you account. You can opt out at any time.

Corie? On live. Britain's Got Talent? On live. Antiques Road Show? On live.

It may be available in the US only.

It may be available through other devices, but Roku makes it 'live'. Live UK tv loads on my tv in about three seconds.
