'I Can't Sing' flops; the future of West End Musical Theatre

Post by kport »

'I Can't Sing!', the much balleyhooed musical produced by Simon Cowell's company, and all about Simon Cowell (even Simon as a young lad and a spotty teen), and his multifarious tv 'talent' competitions, is coming to a distinctly early end after only a few months at London's rather large Palladium Theatre. Even Simon's gazillions and his international entertainment empire (aptly named 'Sycho', though the pronunciation is a hotly-debated topic) could not sustain the losses due to an expensive production in a vast theatre and less than enthusiastic ticket sales. Simon could have kept this going as a vanity project, but his new-found interest as a new dad may have made him come to his senses. Still, reports are that it wasn't without its merits, and the cast is very good. It might be one to catch before it vanishes forever.

Meanwhile, this Guardian article highlights just what is making it in the West End; Billy Elliot the Musical is, of course, one of the survivors (despite the cataclysmic building site around it):
