David Furnish Talks About BETM Coming to Toronto

Post by porschesrule »

This was recorded a while ago and was probably posted on the forum. But as Toronto now has its own section on the forum, I thought it wouldn't hurt to post it here. In this video, David is interviewed by Astral Radio in Toronto. The interviewer is using a helmet cam, which makes the focus interesting at times, but overall a good interview I think. It's especially interesting to hear what David has to say given all that's transpired with the Chicago/Toronto production of the show since this interview was recorded:

Helmet cam.....not a good idea..I got dizzy watching this video :? :?
Nice one, though. BTW had no idea David Furnish was Canadian. Always thought he was British as well.

In this list of "11 Things We Can't Wait For in 2011", Richard Ouzounian, theatre writer for thestar.com, lists Billy Elliot the Musical, opening February 1, 2011 in Toronto. Note that you have to scroll down a little in the article to find his piece.

Elton John will be at the Canadian premiere of BETM. The article says March 1, which is either an error or March 1 is being designated as the "official" opening night and the performances in the whole month of February are being considered previews.

Also in the article is reference to John and Furnish bringing their new son to Canada soon, though it did not say specifically if it would be at the time of BETM's opening or another date.

What a wonderful article. I've read the story of Elton John's involvement with the creation of the show many, many times over the years, but I was moved by this account. The more I read articles by Richard Ouzounian of The Star, the more impressed I am with him.

This type of article brings home to me again a huge reason for the success of this show -- it's that Elton's story is really the story of all the creative team of BETM -- they were as committed as he was from the onset and they continue to be that committed to it today. It's why it just keeps getting better and better.

John and David Furnish agree as to everyone's continued loyalty to the show saying in this article "“We’ve got a built-in remedy for boredom,” insists John. “Seeing the show with a new Billy", concurs Furnish, "is like seeing it for the first time.”

Thanks for finding and posting it, Ellen.

Here's an article from ctv about the origins of Billy Elliot. The article points out that the "official" opening will be March 1, and that David Furnish, who is Canadian, has said he "absolutely will be there."
