Hotels & Dining - New York

One of the invaluable assets of the old forum was the hotel and dining advice shared by forum members. Here is link to the Holiday Inn Express i stayed at on my recent trip. It is maybe 2 1/2 blocks off Times Square on the same street the Imperial is on. So that makes it about 3 blocks to the theater. They also will let you check in early if the room is ready and if it isnt they will store your bags. Also the morning i checked out they stored my bag while i saw some sites before leaving for the airport. Very nice personal.

I'm not sure the cost per nite as it was part of a package deal which included airfare & hotel. My total cost from Atlanta with flight & hotel was a lil over $450 for the weekend. Here is a link to where i booked the deal:

I also booked my last trip to London through them and other than me picking a hotel that was kind of inconvenient to the west end (45 min tube ride) i got a really good deal. Just under a $1000 US for flight & 6 nights hotel.

As far as dining in NYC all i can say it fairly expensive. I had a pasta salad at the TGIF on Time Square and while very good it was $30 with drink. But i can now say i have dined while looking down on Times Square....

If you are a single traveller then there is the Chelsea Lodge. It is a little farther away but reasonably priced.

actually i was originally suppose to be at the Club Quarters but after making my reservations they had to change me to the Holiday Inn Express due to the fact the Club Quarters room had sold out.

Elegant it ain't, but if you want perfectly edible food at a good price, go to the Cafe Edison in the Edison Hotel. The back entrance to the hotel is basically across from the stage door of the Imperial. The last time I was there, Carole Shelley came in and sat down at the table next to me. We chatted a bit, and she graciously autographed my souvenir program, which I happened to have with me.

Food-

Magnolia Bakery- Cupckaes! The one in Greenwhich Village is classic, but there's now one in Rockefeller that I like better. I think it's @ 6th and 47th maybe??

Angus McIndoe- My favorite place to eat post-theatre meals. Good food. Not too pricy if you don't get, like, a steak! I mean, you can def eat for 15 bucks if you want. Unless you get wine. It's on 44th, next to Sardi's and John's Pizzeria.

Basically any pizza place. There's one in Chelsea on 7th avenue just north of 14 street (Hudson side) that's really good, but I don't know the name of it. Great for cheap food! Who wants to pay for a gourmet meal when you can get pizza for 2 bucks?!

Stage Door Deli. Good, comfort food. I didn't take myself there, so I don't remember where it is.

Tavern on the Green. Central Park. (Just joking!! I'd rather use that money for BE tickets!)

If you're going to New York for a Billython, you can't do much better for convenience or price than the Milford Plaza Hotel. It's at the corner of 45th Street and 8th Avenue, directly across the street and down about a half block from the Imperial Theater. I stayed there for the Opening Weekend back in November and I could be out the door of the hotel and walking into the Imperial Theater in just a minute or two. Makes it nice in case of wet weather !

The rooms aren't fancy but the beds were comfortable and they had a security system in place that made you feel safe. I typed in a couple of random dates in their reservation search and found that you can currently get a standard room there (on sale) for the weekend of July 24-26 (for example) for $111 a night ! I think their normal rates are more like $160 a night. Pretty impressive for a location that close to Times Square.

I second Magnolia's bakery (Mentioned in Friends and Sex And The City) in Greenwich Village. Well worth it. The whole of Greenwich Village is actually really lovely.

There's Carnegie's deli.
It's located in midtown Manhattan on 7th Avenue between 54th and 55th Street. Amazingly large portions, amazing cheesecake. A must if you want to experience a typical American deli. The walls are totally covered with autographed pictures of famous patrons.

I also recommend Ellen's Stardust Diner. Which is on 1650 Broadway, Corner of 51st Street. I think you guys on here will love it because, the waiters and waitresses sing! When I was there last I got one of them to sing a song from Wicked, so who knows if they'd do one from Billy Elliot.

There's tonnes more suggestions but these three are ones I think you guys would enjoy. Oh and nothing beats Times Square at night.
