Stephen Daldry was feted at a dinner last night:

I appears Skylight has finished its limited run on Broadway with a bang:

This may have been posted in the past, but this video popped up on Youtube: Stephen Daldry talking about BETM in the early days of Broadway, on Theater Talk:

I will pair with it a similar interview by the same people, with Lee Hall:

Apologies if they have been posted before.

Re: Stephen Daldry
Very interesting interviews. . . . never had seen them before. Just curious - in light of the devastation to mining communities such as Easington which Stephen Daldry and Lee Hall both mentioned here - has there ever been any push to re-open the coal mines that were closed, in an effort to stimulate the economies of the affected regions ? I would think that subsequent leaders would surely see the negative results to those communities and suggest starting the mining business up again. After all, there's still coal down there to be mined, isn't there ?
Re: Stephen Daldry
My understanding is that imported coal is cheaper than coal produced from UK mines. North Sea gas has revolutionized energy production in the UK over the past 30 years. Coal is far removed from the goals of the zero carbon lobby that is very powerful in the UK. For those three reasons - plus the fact that the mining infrastructure will have deteriorated or has been removed since the mines were closed, could make any such scheme untenable.
No other industry has been found to bring to that region to replace the lost jobs; it remains an unemployment blackspot. Tony's prediction has come true, in real life.

Re: Stephen Daldry
Thanks for the clarification. Shame that they haven't been able to create new jobs for the areas that were negatively affected.

Since this thread is actually about Stephen Daldry and not the state of mining in the UK, before this thread gets off topic, remember there is a topic about the state of mining here: http://www.billyelliottheforum.me.uk/fo ... f=5&t=5699

Here is an article, with some productions shots (with Ely Cathedral, standing in for Westminster Abbey), about The Crown, directed by Stephen Daldry for Netflix:

Here is a little Coronation 'it's a small world' factoid: this gentleman was actually one of the choristers who sang in the augmented choir at the Coronation for Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey:
