Could it be headed to Broadway? Time will tell...
This a a risk.

The pedigree is impeccable. Absolutely.

The talent is top notch. Without question.

It will challenge Broadway (or the West End). But anyone who has studied Barrie will know that he pushed the bounds.

Kudos to Sam and the others. Musicals need to escape the tried and true (Wicked) and challenge the status quo. Bring it to Broadway! Let this one FLY!!!

Saw FLY I. Dallas Thursday night. It is an amazing, cutting edge production of a classic. It reminded me of the Wizard do Oz becoming the Wiz but much better. Sam was as great as you would expect with his background, but he is playing a smaller role compared to his past roles. I really enjoyed every minute of FLY and have recommended it to many friends. I am planning to see it again. I recommend it to anyone in, or coming to the Dallas area. One thing that was most impressive was seeing kids playing the role of kids just as in Billy. It's a really good show and production.

I am happy to see the review confirms Isabela Moner (one of Thommie Retter's students) plays Wendy, something I had only previously seen alluded to on private Facebook pages.

I certainly hope FLY will come to Broadway. Some of the powers that be might think it is too soon after Peter and the Starcatcher. Let's hope they are proven wrong.

Here's the opening to the new musical Fly. Sam is wearing a vest and a beanie cap:

Impressive.

It is largely set to music, as is Les Mis?

It looks like a huge production to stage.....Broadway has to be the target. I wonder who is behind this? Why launch in Dallas? (Backers?)

Sam is a stage pro. He has been under professional management for some time. My guess it that he has latched onto a winner, from the few snatches I have seen on Youtube. I hope this one Flies!

Kport Asks :
"Is it largely set to music, as is Les Mis?"
Yes, it is largely set to music, several large production numbers with some talking in between.
"Why launch in Dallas? (Backers?)
"
I have asked folks that I know who are close to the DTC (Dallas Theatre Center), and they are not forthcoming.(don't know)

Just my observations and guesses:
1. The largest corporate sponsor is Kimberly Clark, which is a Dallas based Corporation.
2. The availability of the theatre for over two months for rehearsals and perfecting the final set
3. The artistic director and the managing director are both DTC employees.( not sure the significance of this)
There are a few local actors in the cast who I have seen in other DTC productions, but only a few.
The only other Dallas connection that I can think of is that Mary Martin was the first Peter Pan I ever saw and she is from a nearby town.

Ironically, Peter and the Starcatcher, the latest broadway version of PeterPan will arrive soon at the Winspear Opera House just across the street from where Fly is now playing. (where BETM played two summers ago)
