Is it a misprint? (He wrote the book for Rock of Ages.)
I bet it is, as the theater is also doing Rock of Ages this year.

Yes, a misprint. The show they are actually presenting is called "Billy of Ages", a story about a boy who wants to sing songs like "Big Spender" but his father wants him to perform old folk songs.

Is a can of lager and a best friend involved?

I created an account and because this is a one-off copy and paste for Billy fans interested in the Patchogue show, here's the full text:
The Gateway Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County is currently casting for its upcoming summer season. While the role of Billy Elliot has been cast, Gateway is seeking ensemble positions for their production. These are unpaid positions and there is no participation fee. Talent may be considered, although conflicts with other production schedules will not be permitted and will be cast accordingly.

Those auditioning for the ballet girls, please wear ballet attire or formfitting clothing. Bring ballet shoes, tap shoes and pointe shoes if you are proficient in pointe. Those auditioning for the role of Michael, please bring tap shoes and sneakers and wear clothing suitable for dancing.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 16 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Stage Door School of Dance, 655 Montauk Highway, East Patchogue. Signups begin at 3:30 p.m and close at 4:30 p.m. Please prepare 32 bars of music to sing, and bring sheet music. Accompanist provided. Must be available for daytime rehearsals and all performances, NO exceptions.

Rehearsals: July 7-22. Performances: July 22-Aug. 8.

If you are unable to attend this audition but are interested in auditioning for “Billy Elliot” or if you have any questions regarding this audition, please email: rcolson@gatewayplayhouse.com.
I'm happy to hear they have a Billy cast, as that promises he's a well-trained professional or at least already in training, but surprised to see the phrase "unpaid positions" for some ensemble. Is that common?

Sean

This is interesting:
Upcoming, I will be the Associate Director of BILLY ELLIOT the Musical at
Music Theatre of Wichita and Gateway Playhouse

I recently closed the National Tour of BILLY ELLIOT the Musical where I was the Resident Director and Assistant Stage Manager.

The Gateway Playhouse has been involved in co-productions with other regional theatres in the past (Addams Family, with the Ogunquit Playhouse in 2014, is one example).

The Gateway has a very active children's program. It is quite common for children's roles in large scale productions to draw upon local kid talent.

Regarding pay, I found this site where actors comment upon theatres, from their perspectives:
They won't pay non-union more than 415 cause their equity minimum is 450.

'Camp Gateway' seems to be a bit like a summer camp! A bit rough around the edges, short on creature comforts, but much loved nonetheless.

The Gateway shared this post...

...and I can't help but be confused/irked by this sentence: "These are unpaid positions and there is no participation fee." :? :(

That link doesn't work, Sean. Would this be the correct one?

"These are unpaid positions and there is no participation fee."

Although quite ironic for a show which is partly about a union fighting for survival, the day was bound to come when a production would be casting scabs. :?
