Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾, The Musical

Post by Borrobil »

Here is a fun song promoting, this new Musical which opens in Leicester (That's the City not the Square) next week. Definitely looks like it has potential.
- ex small boy Lewis Andrews sings at 2:08, as one of the Adrians.

That is Mark Collins as the MD. There is some great singing there!

Judging by the names in the creative lineup, it seems to be different from the original stage version:
Townsend adapted the book for the stage in 1984 with music by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley for a 1985 television series.
A successful stage production ran at the Wyndham's Theatre, London, in 1984-1986, that included Simon Gipps-Kent and followed with a road tour.[

Here is the relevant website for this musical:

The book upon which it is based would most certainly have been 'known' by Billy Elliot and his friends; it was 'required reading' from its publication in 1982, and translated to radio and tv.

Ah, I loved that book. The song sounds fun indeed. It's a pity I didn't know of that show earlier, now I have a flight booked back home on April 2nd. :|

That is a great song. :D If the rest of the score is as good as that, this show should be a great West End prospect.

Apparently they'll be using our South Leicester accent :D (In other words no accent at all ;) ). The second Adrian is from close to the authors home. The other accents, well, getting there... I guess that's why the local one smirks when his mate tries to enunciate the vowels in un'derstand and discuv'erd.

It is a very effective - and affecting - song.

I will be interested to find out whether this musical's book has been updated to include current historical and social norms - the original books are so intertwined with early 1980s events and mores that it may not resonate with younger (under 40) theatre goers. (Adrian Mole's 'adolescent angst' is, however, ageless.)

According to The Daily Telegraph, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 looks set to be a hit!
So it’s an unexpected pleasure to report that this all-singing, all-dancing Mole comes up trumps; in fact, it’s so good it could burrow its way to the West End.
Whey hey, man!
