SOLANA BEACH — When 10-year-old Solana Beach resident Charlie Garton read the script for “Billy Elliot the Musical” he was hesitant to audition for the Tony Award-winning show.

“I didn’t want to do it when I realized there were so many bad words,” he said.
So when someone else got the lead, Charlie wasn’t too disappointed. But when that other young actor stepped away after being cast in another show, he decided he could tolerate the profanity and auditioned again.

Charlie Garton is now living in England and he has just joined the UK tour cast of Matilda the Musical. He will be playing the role of Bruce.

Charlie Garton, who played Billy in a regional production of BETM in San Diego in 2017 when he was just 10 years old, appeared on Britain's Got Talent this Saturday. Here's his audition:

I came across this when looking up something about ManU. Apparently the lad who played Billy is the son of Billy Garton, who played for ManU from 1984 to 1990. That led me to discover that Charlie has since been on the finals of Britain's Got Talent (2019). Here are some mores videos of his performances there:
