Gowns and police garb surrounded the red carpet Monday as the Stratford Festival raised the curtain on a new season.

One year after a bomb threat scuttled opening night, officers were stationed around the Festival Theatre as well-dressed patrons filtered in to take in the premiere of Othello and officially open the 67th campaign. Even a mobile command post vehicle recently used during a low-speed chase throughout the Stratford countryside was on site as a precaution.

“We’re just making our presence here tonight to ensure the safety and security of everybody attending, including everyone who works here at the Festival,” Stratford police Const. Darren Fischer said.

At tonight's opening of Stratford's Billy Elliot, the only police visible where on stage, battling the miners or telling Billy to sod off. As is the custom for season openers at Stratford, the evening began with our national anthem, "O Canada", which the crowed joined in enthusiastic singing. The show has been tightened-up since the first preview and has a few minor adjustments. The show and the festival is off to a great start.
