Director Gabriel Barre

I anticipate that this production will be extraordinary. Check out the resume on this director. Please note he directed the wonderful production of Billy Elliot in Mexico. He is also an award-winning actor and choreographer and he use the original choreography in Mexico.

Goodspeed Audience Insights Guide

Post by CJ-Rochester »

Goodspeed has published this excellent Billy Elliot Audience Insights. It's a supplemental program consisting of a Synopsis, Character descriptions, Meet The Writers, Director's Vision, History of the 1984 British Miners Strike, a Glossary of Geordie dialect and terms, and the cast members' Our Billy Elliot Stories. This should be required reading for anyone producing the show.

A confession: I always thought "Bent as a nine bob note" also meant "a derogatory term for a homosexual person". This guide clarifies it means someone who is "extremely dishonest".

Like many sayings, it depends on the context. If used about, say, a second hand car salesman it means dishonest. In BETM, Jackie is saying to Billy “Wayne Sleep ? Wayne Sleep ? He's as bent as a nine bob note son “. Wayne Sleep was a well known ballet dancer and TV personality and it was common knowledge he was gay. He was open about this at the time himself. There is certainly no suggestion that he was in any way dishonest, and therefore your original understanding holds good in the context. The guide gives a very brief description - of necessity - of various terms, but there are other nuances.

Ahh, good to hear, thank you. That's what I had guessed, but I've definitely learned something now regarding the nuance/context of the phrase.

Cheers,
